GFTH ANNUAL USED CLOTHING DRIVE
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2 – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2016
Fall is here and winter is coming, so it’s time once again to begin preparations for our annual Used Clothing Drive. GFTH is a leading provider of clothing and other necessary items to homeless service providers, and the only organization that focuses the attention of the Washington, DC-metro area legal community on this acute problem, on this scale.
Last year, with support from the DC metro-area law community and at large, over 300 volunteers came together to sort approximately 3,000 bags of good, used clothing, blankets and other items and delivered them to 60 area organizations that provided direct service to homeless men, women and families.
Help is needed again this year! This is what you can do right now:
Anyone can get the ball rolling and hold their own “feeder” clothing drive now. It can take place at your employer’s office, your office building (some office buildings will allow a bin to be placed in the lobby), school, apartment building, church or anwyere else where there is a safe spot to collect donations. We only accept clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, sheets and towels, and travel toiletries. As we only can receive donations during the drive weekend, all donations would need to be stored at your site.
Clothing Drop-off: Friday, December 2, 2016 8:00 am – 6:30 pm (Clothing will also be received from 8 am to noon on Saturday, December 3rd). Location: Portals III Building, 1200 Maryland Avenue, SW (same as the last 10 years). We will be camped out on the street level of the D Street side, between 12th and 13th Streets. There’s even an easy-drive-up curb lane and volunteers to unload your vehicles.
You can feel free to create your own signs to advertise the collection effort, but please also feel free to contact email@example.com if you would like to receive sample flyers and emails that you can customize to rally your law firm, office, school, religious organization, non-profit, other organizations, etc.
Save the date for the drive andd consider volunteering during one of the days. Volunteers help sort, bag, and transport clothing at the drive site. We also need volunteers to help deliver clothing and other donations directly to the homeless service providers during the weekend of the drive, where it is not uncommon to meet those who you help serve.
Volunteer Days: Thursday, December 1 (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.); Friday, December 2, 2016 (all day); Saturday, December 3, 2016 (all day); and Sunday, December 4, 2016 (only a limited number of slots in the morning and early afternoon only). Sign up right here!
In addition to collecting clothes, or if you won’t be able to organize a feeder drive, we encourage everyone to spread the word that monetary donations are needed. What GFTH does with its public donations is truly remarkable. We bulk-purchase new clothing at incredibly low prices to fill the wish lists of shelters and other service providers whose needs cannot be met through used clothing donations. Here are a few examples of how monetary donations are put to good use:
· $25 purchases three dozen pairs of men’s briefs
· $35 purchases one dozen men’s heavy thinsulate-lined gloves
· $55 buys one dozen hooded sweatshirts
· $100 buys one dozen fleece blankets
· $250 purchases five dozen sets of children’s thermal underwear
