Do you want to help the DC metro area homeless?  Is your time limited due to work (billable hours anyone?), law school and other studies, or other commitments and you only have a few spare hours on a cold winter weekend?  Do enjoy spending time with others during the holiday season who are joyful and also like to help others in need?

Whether you have a few hours to spare or more, we have the perfect opportunity for you.  GFTH is holding our annual used clothing drive again this year — this time in 2015 from December 4 (Friday) to December 6 (Sunday).  Our drives are successful because of all of the wonderful volunteers who help us each year, and we are in need of volunteers once again this year.  Volunteers typically come from area law firms and other legal organizations, as well as law firms and vendors.  We also welcome volunteers from all other corners of the DC metro area, including but not limited to community groups, religious organizations, non-profits, government, homeless services providers and individuals.  Adults and children of all ages are welcome.  No experience is necessary!

The Portals III at 1201 Maryland Avenue SW in downtown DC (metro accessible and near plenty of street and garage parking) is generously donating space to GFTH again for this year’s drive.  We need help with a variety of activities during the weekend, to include receiving clothing donations at our curbside drop-off, sorting and bagging used clothing, and delivering donations to area shelters and other beneficiaries.  We especially are in need of drivers (those with SUVs, trucks and vans are much appreciated) and their passengers who can make the deliveries since GFTH only can make deliveries during the weekend and we often reach 65+ shelters in DC, Maryland and Virginia.  Deliveries are a special part of the weekend as well for volunteers because it is a unique opportunity to see where they donations go and the appreciation from the beneficiaries.

Online volunteer sign up is now open for the GFTH annual used clothing drive right over here.  We look forward to seeing you at the drive!

AmeriCorps volunteers by the massive pile of donations
AmeriCorps volunteers by the massive pile of donations

Our annual used clothing drives are amazing successes due largely to the hundreds of volunteers who generously dedicate their time, effort, and good spirits to help sort, bag and/or deliver clothing donations to DC-metro area shelters and other local organizations who aid the homeless each and every year.  This year, we are in need of volunteers from Friday, December 5th through Sunday, December 7th — sign up now!!!!

Volunteering for our annual used clothing drive is an easy low commitment to serve the local community, as well as a good way to meet other like-minded individuals who enjoy doing the same.  While many of our volunteers come from the legal community, we also welcome all others, including but not limited to individuals, couples, families, non-profits, volunteer and community groups, children’s groups (such as the boy and girl scouts), and religious organizations.

We appreciate any amount of time that volunteers can provide throughout the weekend of our event, whether it may be an hour, five, or multiple days.  It is not unusual for volunteers to plan to come for just one hour and then stay the full day.  The choice is yours!  We provide food and soft drinks to thank you for your help and to keep you energized.

Online volunteer sign-up is now open.  If you would like to sign-up to volunteer as a group, please contact Ceceile at  Volunteers on Friday are especially needed 😉

We look forward to seeing you at the drive!

This is a summary of the 2010 Used Clothing Drive on December 2, 2011 – December 4, 2011.

Volunteers have fun sorting at our 2010 Used Clothing Drive.

Clothing Receivers: On Friday, December 2, 2010, as the drive begins, the clothing donations will be brought from the participating firms and organizations to this year’s sorting location. For 2010, we will be sorting at the Portals III, on D Street SW, between 12th and 13th streets, SW. Volunteers are on duty all day Friday to receive the clothes and set up the site for the weekend’s activities. We welcome volunteers to help us receive the clothes on Friday especially in the afternoon! By Friday night, the donations are usually enough to fill several large rooms floor to ceiling!

Download a map that shows the sorting site, as well as a site plan for the building that shows the entrance on D Street SW where we will be receiving all deliveries of clothing. Please drop off deliveries at the D Street entrance. It will be clearly marked. Volunteers should also enter the building from D Street, SW.

Clothing Sorters & Distributors: On Saturday, December 3, the real heavy lifting begins. Volunteers dig in to the countless bags and boxes of donated clothing and separate them by gender and type of item. The donations are then bagged, labeled, and sorted, ready for delivery. While this is a time-consuming process, it is critically important in order to meet the stated needs of each of the shelters. At the same time, other volunteers deliver the donations to the shelters throughout town. The whole operation continues until the last bag is donated to the last shelter, usually late Sunday afternoon.
